My name is Maggie Braun, and for me, genealogy is more than just a hobby—it’s a lifelong adventure. I’ve been digging into my own family roots for nearly 40 years, and for the last decade, I’ve had the joy of teaching others how to do the same.
A Bit About My Journey
I’ve always been a student of history. With a B.A. in General Studies from Valdosta State and a Master’s in teaching Social Studies from the University of Southern California, I spent years in the classroom in Arlington, Texas. I loved teaching high school history and art, and I had the privilege of coaching students to the State level in UIL Academics and National History Day.
In the classroom, I learned how to take complex information and make it engaging and accessible. Now, I’m bringing that same passion to genealogy.
My Research Heart
While I love all aspects of family history, my current research focus is the Post-Civil War Southern United States. There is something so powerful about uncovering the stories of resilience and survival in the South, and I love sharing the tips and tricks I’ve learned while navigating those specific archives.
I often say I’m a “genealogist by accident and vocation.” I didn’t plan for this to become my life’s work, but the thrill of the discovery—that “Aha!” moment when a piece of the puzzle finally fits—is addictive.
Beyond the Archives
When I’m not staring at a family tree or speaking at a genealogy conference, you can usually find me leaning into my creative side. I’m a proud Texan (by the Grace of God!), a self-proclaimed tech nerd, and a lover of all things handmade. Whether I’m sewing, quilting, weaving baskets, painting, or photographing, I’m always creating.
And yes, I am a collector of art supplies. (Some might call it “hoarding,” but I prefer the term “curating a comprehensive resource library”!)

I started this journey because I believe everyone deserves to know where they came from. Genealogy can feel overwhelming—especially the technical side of things—but it doesn’t have to be. My goal is to walk beside you, simplify the process, and celebrate every small win as we uncover your family’s story together.
